The works by Christo Daskaltsis are truly abstract. Titled only with the date of production, such as in this case 0819-01, the works are left open to interpretation by the viewer. The artist’s methodology remains the same for each of his paintings. Using oil paints on an aluminium canvas, the artist relies on the chemical reaction between the oil paints and turpentine which he applies to dissolve the pigments in the paint. Using then a broom, the artist laboriously works over the surface of the canvas to create breathtaking results. The finished works monochrome and yet full of nuance. Through illusion the elements of the painting seem to rise beyond the canvas or invert invert but the surface remains two-dimensional. The compositions may be perceived as the surface of a planet, a snowy landscape, detail of a rock or the view through a microscope – it truly lies in the eye of the beholder.

Die Werke des Künstlers Christo Daskaltsis sind wahrlich abstrakt. Nur mit dem Datum der Erstellung betitelt, wie in diesem Fall 0819-01, steht die Interpretation des Werks dem Betrachter offen. Die Methodik des Künstlers ist für jedes Gemälde gleich. Mit Öl Farbe auf einer Aluminium Platte malend, nutzt der Künstler die chemische Reaktion zwischen Öl Farbe und Terpentin um die Pigmente in der Farbe zu lösen. Mit einem Besen bearbeitet der Künstler nun die Oberfläche des Werkes um ein atemberaubendes Resultat hervorzubringen. Die fertigen werke sind zwar monochrom aber voller Nuancen. Durch eine Illusion erscheint es als erheben sich Elemente von der aluminium Platte oder als ob sie in die Platte hinein versinken und dennoch ist die Oberfläche zwei-dimensional. Die Kompositionen können als Oberfläche eines Planetens erkannt werden, als eine Schnee-Landschaft, als Detailaufnahme eines Gesteins oder wie die Sicht durchs Mikroskop – es liegt immer im Auge des Betrachters.
