There must have been a strongly interest for the unknown from the beginning of her career. Bach escaped her small German hometown in an early age to live in the vibrant city of Berlin during the 1980ies. After spending a couple of years in Senegal, Africa, where Elvira Bach met her Senegalese husband with whom she later had two children, depictions of African people and most of all women of color started to appear in her work until today – they don’t seem to be individuals though, but function as idealized images of the feminine.
