Stadt, Architektur, Mobilität | City, architecture, mobility

Stadt, Architektur, Mobilität – das sind die Themen, mit denen Jan Ros sich seit langem befasst. Ausgehend von fotografischen Vorlagen, verwandelt er diese Motive in eine vielgestaltige Malerei, die wesentlich an Raum und Gegenstand orientiert ist, aber auch abstrakte, ganz aus der Farbe definierte Passagen hervorbringt. So wechselt er Schärfegrade und Bewegungsverläufe je nach Sujet, modelliert plastische Volumen aus breiten Pinselzügen, arbeitet mit schablonenhaften Einschüben und scharfen Konturen, die sich wie ein Cut-Out aus ihrem malerischen Umfeld abheben.

City, architecture, mobility – these are themes Jan Ros has explored for a long time. Using photographs as source material, he transforms them into multifarious paintings mainly oriented toward space and object, but which also engender abstract passages defined entirely by color. He switches the degree of acuity and path of movement depending on the subject, modeling sculptural volumes out of broad brushstrokes, and working with stencil-like inserts and sharp contours that stand out from their painted surroundings like cut-outs.

Repertoire | Repertory

Zu Jan Ros’ Repertoire gehören urbane Landschaften ebenso wie berühmte Bauwerke der internationalen Moderne, aber auch Darstellungen von Autos und Flugzeugen, von transitorischen Orten wie Tankstellen und Terminals, die immer wieder an filmische Bilder denken lassen, an Szenen wie aus einem Road Movie. Dass ferner auch die Wechselwirkungen von Innen und Außen, von Licht und Schatten eine wichtige Rolle spielen, zeigen seine gemalten Interieurs, die den Blick auf ein städtisches Panorama oder durch fensterlose Zimmerfluchten lenken – und so den realen Raum des Betrachters imaginär erweitern.

Ros’s repertoire includes urban landscapes and famous modernist, International-style buildings, as well as images of cars and airplanes, or of transitory sites like gas stations and transit terminals, which often recollect filmed images, like scenes from a road movie. Furthermore, his paintings of interiors – which feature views of urban panoramas or guide the gaze through a suite of windowless rooms, thus expanding the viewer’s real space through the imagination – also demonstrate that the interaction of inside and outside, light and shade, plays an important role.

Berlin als Motiv | Berlin as a Motif

In der Einzelausstellung von Jan Ros bei RASCHE RIPKEN im Herbst 2020 sind Bilder aus seinem neuen Berlin-Zyklus zu sehen, der markante Architekturen der Vor- und Nachkriegsmoderne umfasst, darunter das Steglitzer Turmrestaurant, der Umlauftank im Tiergarten oder das Motel an der Avus.

Jan Ros’s solo exhibition at RASCHE RIPKEN in autumn 2020 will show pictures from his new Berlin cycle, which encompasses remarkable pieces of architecture designed by pre- and post-war modernists, including the Steglitz Tower Restaurant, the circulation tank in the Tiergarten, and the motel at the Avus rest stop.
