About the artist

Katerina Belkina wurde 1974 in Kuibyschew, Russland, geboren. Schon früh wusste Katerina Belkina um ihr außergewöhnliches Talent, die Welt mit anderen Augen zu sehen. Geboren in Samara im südöstlichen Teil des europäischen Russlands, wurde sie von ihrer Mutter, einer bildenden Künstlerin, in einer kreativen Atmosphäre erzogen. Ihre Ausbildung als Malerin an der Kunstakademie und ab 2000 an der Schule für Fotografie von Michael Musorin in Samara gab ihr das Handwerkszeug, um ihre Ideen zu visualisieren. Es folgten Ausstellungen ihrer erhabenen, mystischen Selbstporträts in Moskau und Paris. 2007 wurde Katerina Belkina für den renommierten Kandinsky Prize (vergleichbar mit dem britischen Turner Prize) in Moskau nominiert. Kürzlich erhielt sie den Hasselblad Masters Prize. Derzeit lebt und arbeitet sie in Werder (Havel) bei Berlin.

Katerina Belkina was born 1974 in Kuibyschew, Russia. Early on Katerina Belkina knew about her exceptional talent to see the world through different eyes. Born in Samara in the southeast of European Russia, she was brought up in an creative atmosphere by her mother, a visual artist. Her education as painter at the Art Academy and from 2000 at the school for Photography of Michael Musorin in Samara gave her the tools to visualize her ideas. Exhibitions of her sublime, mystic self-portraits ensued in Moscow and Paris. In 2007 Katerina Belkina was nominated for the prestigious Kandinsky Prize (comparable to the British Turner Prize) in Moscow. Recently she got the Hasselblad Masters Prize. Currently she lives and works in Werder (Havel) near Berlin.

Ich kreiere Bilder, weil ... | I create pictures, because ...

Es war für mich schon immer faszinierend, die Psychologie der Beziehungen der Menschen untereinander und zur Außenwelt zu erforschen, den menschlichen Emotionen Gestalt zu geben. Freude, Mutlosigkeit, Gleichgültigkeit, Verzückung und Eifersucht in Stücke zu reißen. Gefühle sind abstrakt, deshalb ist es so interessant, die Form ihrer Visualisierung zu suchen und zu finden.

It has always been fascinating for me to explore the psychology of people’s relationships with each other and with the outside world, to give shape to human emotions. To take joy, despondency, indifference, rapture and jealousy to pieces. Feelings are abstract, therefore it is so interesting to look for and find the form of their visualization.

Wie funktioniert das Visualisieren? | How does visualization work?

Mein Gesicht und mein Körper sind die Hauptinstrumente, die ich benutze, um die Bilder zu verkörpern, die ich mir wünsche. Wenn ich als Modell vor der Kamera stehe, folge ich der uralten theatralischen Praxis des Rollenspiels. Sie gibt Impulse für die Entwicklung meiner eigenen Erzählweise. Ein Teil meiner Arbeit, das Drehen, gleicht einer Theateraufführung, bei der sich der Drang, dem Zuschauer von Emotionen und Gefühlen zu erzählen, durch die Figuren in Dialogen mit dem Publikum manifestiert.

My face and body are the main instruments I use to incarnate the images I want. Standing in front of the camera as a model, I follow the age-old theatrical practice of playing roles. It gives impetus to the development of my own manner of narration. A part of my work, shooting is akin to a theatrical performance, where an urge to tell the viewer about emotions and feelings manifests itself through the characters in dialogues with the audience.

Wie mein ganz spezieller Stil entstand | How my special style was developed

Die Leidenschaft für die klassische Kunst und das Interesse an allem Neuen – Technologie, Entdeckungen, Experimente – führten mich zu der Art von Mischtechnik, mit der ich arbeite. Aus der Malerei nehme ich Farben und schaffe Luft als Element des Raumes. Realität und Charakter entnehme ich der Fotografie. Mein Stil entstammt einer langen künstlerischen Tradition – der Collage. Auf diese Weise kommen meine Charaktere und Räume zusammen. Im nächsten Schritt wähle ich einen Pinsel aus einem Grafikprogramm. Dies ist ein subtiles und präzises Werkzeug, um eine leichte, schwerelose Atmosphäre zu schaffen, die der eines Traumes ähnelt. In meiner kreativen Arbeit suche ich nicht nach den Themen der Gedanken. Sie entspringen dem alltäglichen Leben und den Beobachtungen der Menschen um mich herum. Indem ich ein Motiv für meine Erkundung wähle, biete ich dem Publikum eine weibliche Sicht auf die Dinge, die mich betreffen. Diese Sichtweise beruht zweifellos auf feministischen Prinzipien. Aber es geht nicht um Konfrontation, sondern um Ausgewogenheit und Harmonie, bei der die Frau nicht Objekt, sondern vor allem Energie ist.

A passion for classical art and interest in everything new – technology, discoveries, experiments – led me to the type of mixed media, with which I work. From painting, I take colors and create air as an element of space. Reality and character I take from photography. My style originates from a long artistic tradition – collage. That is how my characters and spaces come together. At the next stage, I choose a brush of a graphics program. This is a subtle and accurate tool to create a light, weightless atmosphere similar to that of a dream. In my creative work, I am not searching for the subjects of thought. They spring from everyday life and observations of the people around. Choosing a motif for my exploration, I offer the audience a female view on things, which concern me. Undoubtedly, this view is based on feminist principles. Yet, the matter is not in confrontation, but in balance and harmony, where a woman is not an object, but foremost-energy.
