Kunst im öffentlichen Raum | Art in public space

Die Freude an Sinta Tantras Arbeit liegt in ihrer geschickten Fähigkeit, den Raum durch ihren raffinierten und spielerischen Einsatz von Farbe und dynamischen abstrakt-geometrischen Designs zu transformieren. Seit ihren ersten Projekten Mitte der 2000er Jahre interessiert sich Tantra gern auch für die Rolle, die ihre Arbeit im öffentlichen Raum spielt. Sie zeigt ihre Kunst international auf Brücken, Gebäuden, Spielplätzen und anderen Strukturen, die regelmäßig genutzt werden und eine soziale Funktion haben. Diese Orte und Stätten werden dann durch das Prisma modernistischer Denker und Künstler wie Buckminster Fuller, Alexander Calder und Sol LeWitt gefiltert, Figuren, die durch ihr gemeinsames Interesse an der Welt, Konnektivität und utopischen Bestrebungen für die Zukunft verbunden sind. Ihre Praxis der Kunst im öffentlichen Raum fließt kontinuierlich in neue Zeichnungen, Gemälde, Drucke und Skulpturen ein, wie Blaupausen für ein Gebäude.

The joy of Tantra’s work is in her deft ability to transform space through her refined and playful use of colour and dynamic abstract-geometric designs. From her earliest projects in the mid-2000s, Tantra has been interested in the role her work has in the public realm, showing her art internationally on bridges, buildings, playgrounds, and other structures which are regularly used and have a social function. These places and sites are then filtered through the prism of modernist thinkers and artists such as Buckminster Fuller, Alexander Calder and Sol LeWitt, figures linked by their shared interest in the world, connectivity, and utopian aspiraSons for the future. Her public art practice continuously informs new drawings, paintings, prints, and sculptures, like blueprints for a building.

Die Praxis der Farbcollage | The pratice of colour collage

Sinta Tantras vielseitige künstlerische Praxis umfasst ein breites Spektrum: von Kunst im öffentlichen Raum und Installation bis hin zu Skulptur und Malerei. Bekannt ist sie vor allem für ihre Praxis der “Farbcollage”, bei der getrennte Elemente durch architektonische Linien und leuchtende Farben vereint werden. In jüngster Zeit hat Tantra ein Interesse am Weben entwickelt, sowohl im Hinblick auf die uralte physische Praxis als auch auf das Konzept der Verbindung von Raum, Objekt und Zeit. Während diese Faszination vielleicht am deutlichsten in Tantras Installationen zu sehen ist, in denen der Betrachter oft eingeladen ist, um das dreidimensionale Kunstwerk herumzugehen, gibt es auch in ihren Gemälden ein Gefühl von Tiefe. Nachdem der Entwurf auf das Leinen aufgezeichnet und skizziert wurde, wird die selbst gemixte Temperafarbe schnell und präzise aufgetragen, um eine scheinbar flache, grafische Farbe zu erzeugen. Doch bei näherer Betrachtung kann der Betrachter die Pinselstriche der Künstlerin physisch sehen und fühlen, wobei die Bereiche der rohen Leinwand das Weben und Weben des Leinengewebes offenbaren. Auf diese Weise nimmt uns das Gemälde mit auf eine Reise nicht nur durch die Dimensionen, sondern auch durch Zeit und Raum. „Ich betrachte es als eine Theaterkulisse”, kommentiert Tantra. Die Idee von Requisiten oder Kunstwerken, die es einem ermöglichen, zwischen privatem und öffentlichem Raum zu wechseln, während die Vorstellungskraft den Sprung von dem Ort, an dem man sich wirklich befindet, zu einem imaginären Ort macht.

Sinta Tantra’s multifaceted artistic practice encompasses everything from public art and installation to sculpture and painting. Known primarily for her practice of ‘colour collage’ whereby separate elements are united through architectural lines and vibrant colour, Tantra has recently developed an interest in weaving with regards to both the ancient physical practice and the concept of interconnecting space, object and Sme. Whilst this fascination is perhaps most apparent in Tantra’s installations in which the viewer is often invited to walk around the three-dimensional artwork, there is also a sense of depth in her paintings. Once the blueprint design is mapped and masked onto the linen, tempera paint is then quickly and precisely applied to create a seemingly flat, graphic colour. Yet on closer examination, the viewer is able to physically see and feel the artist’s brush-strokes with areas of raw canvas exposing the waft and weave of the linen. In this way, the painting takes us on a journey of not only dimensions but also Sme and space. ‘I think of it as a theatre set,’ commented Tantra. ‘The idea of props or artworks allowing you to weave between private and public space as your imagination makes the jump from where you really are to an imaginary place.’

Farben als Katalysator | Colours as a catalyst

„Ich beziehe mich oft auf eine tropische Pop-Palette und englische Heritage-Farben und denke dabei an die Spannung zwischen maskulin und feminin, aber auch an die wechselnden Farben des Lichts selbst. Als ich in Bali aufgewachsen bin, habe ich immer den Sonnenuntergang geliebt und wie Rosa in Blau übergeht und es dann plötzlich dunkel wird.“ Für Tantra ist diese Reise durch die Farben der Katalysator für kreatives Eintauchen sowohl für sie als Künstlerin als auch für den Betrachter: ‘Wenn ich Farben an die Wand oder auf den Boden male, möchte ich, dass die Menschen die architektonischen Räume, die sie bewohnen, genauer betrachten, sei es in ihrem Zuhause oder im städtischen Umfeld. Ich möchte, dass die Menschen inspiriert werden und Freude daran finden, die Welt um sie herum zu gestalten und zu verändern.“

‘I like the narrative individual colours can bring,’ says Tantra. ‘I often refer to a tropical pop pale\e and English heritage colours, considering the tension between masculine and feminine, but also the changing colours of light itself. Growing up in Bali, I always loved the sunset and how pink merges into blue and then suddenly it’s dark.’ For Tantra, this journey through colour is the catalyst for creative immersion both for herself as an arSst and for the viewer: ‘When I paint colours on the wall or the floor, I want people to look more carefully at the architectural spaces they inhabit, whether this is in their homes or urban environments. I want people to be inspired, to find joy both in making and changing the world around them.’
