Schiffe, insbesondere Narrenschiffe gehören zu den Leitmotiven des Künstlers. Das ist nicht überraschend, kann er doch mit ihnen die Themen ins Bild setzen, die ihn zeitlebens beschäftigen:
Das Reisen und der Aufbruch in andere Welten und das Ausgeliefertsein des Menschen inmitten feindlicher Elemente. Dieses existentielle In-die-Welt-geworfen-Sein und die daraus erwachsende Unsicherheit sind Hiltners zentrale Themen, ebenso wie der kurzsichtige und oft absurde Umgang mit dieser Situation, die er an sich und seinen Mitreisenden beobachten kann. Oft fährt die Religion als letzte Appellationsinstanz, die schlussendlich alles richten soll, auf diesen Schiffen mit. Entweder ist der oberste Steuermann selbst an Bord – z.B. als gekreuzigte Ziegengottheit wie in „Unser Narrenschiff mit Heiliger Kleinfamilie“ oder er betrachtet unbeteiligt von oben die Szene etwas gelangweilt wie in „Oben der Allmächtige in seiner Dreifaltigkeit, unten wir Narren auf unserem Schiff……“ Hiltner versteht unsere Welt als Narrenschiff, auf dem wir unbeirrbar dem Untergang entgegen segeln.
